Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.
— C. G. Jung

How do we begin?

Taking the first step can be daunting. Please call or email me and we can arrange a time to meet. The sessions are 50 minutes, although our initial session may be a little longer. When we meet (via Zoom or FaceTime) we can discuss your background and current life situation as well as what is troubling you. Although painful and difficult issues are only discussed once a client feels ready to do so. It's important that we both feel that we can work well together and usually 1 or 2 sessions are enough to determine if I am the right therapist for you. If so we will then decide on practical arrangements such as appointment times and fee structure.

How do I work?

The form of psychotherapy I trained in is based on the work of Carl Gustav Jung and is about bringing into consciousness the unconscious aspects of a person's psyche. Attention is paid to a client's everyday life and their interactions with others to see how these are affected by the unconscious assumptions we make. Jung placed a special emphasis on dreams and the imagination as a way into the unconscious. He believed that a great deal of powerful, and potentially good, psychic energy is stored in the unconscious which, for one reason or another, can become lost to us. If this energy remains stuck in our unconscious, its effect can be negative and cause us to suffer from an imbalance in our lives; we might feel out of control or suffer from depression or anxiety. Jung believed a neurosis often masked a deeper suffering. The depression, anxiety or problem can be thought of as an inner voice which has not properly been heard or expressed. By allowing these parts of ourselves to be properly understood, we develop a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and with others. Jung called this the journey of Individuation.

I believe that the quality of the therapeutic relationship is central to the work. Helping a person to explore their inner life should be done with respect, compassion and without judgment.

My fees

My fees range from £75-90 and are negotiable depending on your personal circumstances and the time and day we meet.  Evening and weekend appointments are more expensive than weekdays. The fee may be lower for analysis involving more than one session per week.

My initial consultation fee is £75.  Do check if I have availability for lower cost sessions if you feel that working with me feels right for you.

In depth analysis usually involves meeting twice a week or sometimes once a week.  I offer both long-term analysis and short-term therapy, depending on the circumstances.

Cancellation Policy

Please enquire about my cancellation policy as this is discussed with clients once we have made the decision to work together on a regular basis.

Confidentiality

Our sessions together will be confidential, in line with UKCP guidelines. This means that whatever is discussed between us remains private. It is, however, normal practice for all professional psychotherapists to discuss their client work with a qualified supervisor. This is expected of all psychotherapists who adhere to UKCP and GAP codes of practice. I have regular sessions with my supervisor. Supervision protects the well-being of both the client and the therapist and ensures that the therapist's work continues at a high standard.

My Location

I’m currently conducting sessions either online or in person from my home on Toronto Terrace, Brighton BN2 or at The Brighton Counselling Rooms, 46 Down Terrace, Brighton BN2 9ZH here.

Coronavirus Update

I see a few clients in person and others via Zoom or FaceTime as well as doing phone sessions.

While the thought of communicating through video conference or phone might initially elicit some apprehension, it’s important to know that this form of therapy can be just as effective as sessions held in-person. As with face-to-face appointments, we will start by scheduling an initial consultation so you can get a feel for how I work. You can then decide if you would like to continue with more appointments.

I have frequently seen people become neurotic when they content themselves with inadequate or wrong answers to the questions of life. They seek position, marriage, reputation, outward success of money, and remain unhappy and neurotic even when they have attained what they were seeking. Such people are usually confined within too narrow a spiritual horizon. Their life has not sufficient content, sufficient meaning. If they are enabled to develop into more spacious personalities, the neurosis generally disappears.
